Fifteen years ago in his
President’s Message, Gerry
Bragg wrote of the first 50 years
of Eustis Engineering’s projects.
He paralleled the development
of New Orleans to the
growth of Eustis Engineering
citing our involvements with
the Poydras Street corridor,
Interstate 10, New Orleans
Convention Center, New Orleans
Superdome, Crescent
City Connection, Port facilities,
Aquarium of the Americas,
and a myriad of other projects
that brought New Orleans
from the post WWII years to the
21st century. He was then, as
we are today, rightly proud of
this heritage.
However, 2005 was our “Katrina Year” and the things that were before are no longer. Eustis Engineering did like most of those affected … we went back to work. Looking back on these six years, I realize how much of Eustis Engineering’s history and culture have helped us in these recent years. As our pre-Katrina projects paralleled the development of the modern Greater New Orleans Area, our post Katrina projects mirror its recovery. Eustis Engineering was “on the ground” within days after the breaches working to repair and redesign flood protection. This has continued to this day. Eustis Engineering was the geotechnical engineer of record for significant recovery projects, notably the Biloxi Bay Bridge and IHNC Surge Barrier. Both of these projects were highlighted in the ASCE’s Civil Engineering magazine…quite an accomplishment for any firm and especially impressive with our ancillary workload. All this and our employees still took care of business. We have had seven weddings and fifteen babies. We have had two of our engineers earn Master’s Degrees in Engineering (Rebecca Scherer and Jacob Indest) and Jim Hance a MBA. Many others also had accomplishments. We repaired our homes, built new ones, and cared for our families. We have made it through to the other side. These past six years have presented us not with adversity but opportunities. These opportunities are the foundations for our future beyond the Katrina recovery. From infrastructure to industrial facilities to architectural landmarks, we have left our contributions to development and recovery. I am proud of these efforts and am proud of each of our employees. Remembering our heritage and knowing our culture, I look forward to what our future brings. ![]() Bill Gwyn, P.E. President Summer 2011 Eusitis Engineering Companies Horizon: Newsletter.
